Ras Shante Sandile Siphamandla Bekwa

Leader of The Meditators, composer and multi-instrumentalist, Shante Bekwa, a humble and quiet spoken man, was born at Baragwanath hospital, Jhb on 28th February 1970. He  grew up in New Castle, KZN, moved to Joburg in 1989 and played bass guitar with the Roots Rock Reggae Band from Mandini, KZN.

Shante eventually left this outfit to follow his dream of having his own band to perform and record with, and The Meditators was founded in 1991. Shante began writing song melodies and lyrics from a young age, having received the gift and love of  music from his father who was a musician. Shante met his father for the first time when he was 24.

Shantes first guitar was homemade, using a 5litre oil can and bicycle breaks to hold the strings in place. His 2nd guitar was the broken neck of a real guitar joined to the same oil can...and Shantes first real guitar was a gift, from the son of the Pastor at his Church,  St. John's Apostolic Mission in New Castle.

Shante grew up with his  Grandmother who  taught him the skill of sewing and after his Mother  moved to Durban in order to unite Shante with his father, he discovered his talent as a tailor/designer. His current  business, Peoples Pride,  is situated at Berea Station where he  makes and sells his unique style of  ladies and gents designs as well as Rasta memorabilia, jewellery, t/shirts and The Meditators cds.  Shante  does his own screen printing in his yard in Mayville where he lives with his Queen, Bets and their three children, Merkeda, Xoliswa and Zeng.
